How to Create a European Inspired Wedding in New England | The Garden at Elm Bank

The timelessness of European style is a frequent source of inspiration for New England weddings. This aesthetic is perfect for the couple who appreciates history, has strong attention to detail, and values visual story-telling. Some of the most iconic sources of inspiration for European inspired weddings comes from the Rococo period. Known for its pastel colors, exceptionally ornate detail, and almost theatrical architecture, this period continues to inform artists and designers well into the 2020’s.

Hosting a European inspired wedding in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or anywhere else in New England may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite manageable. While you’re planning, consider a few things:

  • Venue- Where you chose to host your wedding will set the tone for the entire event. If your goal is to create a European experience, look for venues that offer lush gardens, ornate architecture, and unique history. This inspiration shoot took place at The Garden at Elm Bank in Wellesley, Massachusetts and it perfectly compliments the intricate style of the Rococo period.

  • Color Palette- I recommend keeping with the tradition of pastel tones. Blush pink, sage green, champagne, and dove gray all compliment the stone work and the florals that your venue will showcase. Mix and match options can add some exciting detail to your bridal party gowns, click here for some inspiration!

  • Hair and Makeup- Hair and makeup should be neutral and classic, complimenting your natural beauty and not overwhelming it. Light colored accents and soft skin tones are what will give you that timeless painterly look (aka leave the spray tan for the bachelorette party!) Verde Salons, based in Braintree did the gorgeous bridal look for this shoot.

  • Dress- The iconic dress Rococo inspired dress doesn’t have to break the bank! My favorite dress designer is Watters because their gowns are intricately detailed, have an effortless flow, and are seriously romantic. Allegria Bridal in Belmont carries their line: look for gowns with elaborate beading, unique texture, or delicate lace detail.

  • Stationary- Paper goods are a wonderful way to let guests know what to expect from your wedding. This is the first design element that will touch the hands of your closest family members and friends- don’t let it be an after thought. Keep with the theme of neutral colors, and delicate detail in your stationary design. And if you’re feeling stuck, seek a professional! This shoot features the work of August and White, and Jen Simpson.
